Mestre Pele (Djalma Pereira) became involved with Capoeira a the age of 13. Born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, he began studying at the Associacao de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento in Salvador, where he was a student of Mestre Angola.
Mestre Pele is a caring and humble person who is passionate about his art and is eager to teach his students the traditions of Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian culture. He has been instructing Capoeira and performing internationally as a professional performer for 27 years. He has taught Capoeira in Bahia (as assistant of Mestre Angola), Florida, and California. Since 1996 Mestre Pele owns and manages Associacao de Capoeira Corpo e Movimento in Fort Lauderdale,Florida, where he instructs adults and children in the art of Capoeira, Maculele, and Afro-Brazilian Dance and Culture. He also organizes many performances at events in the greater Fort Lauderdale area.
Mestre Pele is an expert in Afro-Brazilian dance and culture. For several years he was a professional dancer at the world renowned Bale Folclorico da Bahia. Later, from 1989 to 1992, Mestre Pele performed in the North American tour of OBA OBA: The Brazilian Dance-Musical. His performance included Capoeira, Frevo, Maculele, and Afro-Brazilian dance. He performed at the Maquis Theater on Broadway, New York, The Pantages Theater, Hollywood -Los Angeles, The Orpheum Theater, San Francisco, and The Aladdin Hotel, Las Vegas.
In 1991 Mestre Pele was a background Actor in a major motion-picture ‘Only The Strong,’ directed by Sheldon Lettich. He participated in this movie as a Capoeira Performer. During his extensive carrier Mestre Pele has been employed as a professional performer and choreographer in many venues such as Brasil Carnival Restaurante in Orlando, Fl, Brazilian Tropicana Restaurant in Pompano Beach, Fl, Paulo Gualano Productions (International tour Company), Viva Bahia in Salvador, Bahia, and Brazil Total in Salvador, Bahia.
Mestre Pele has lead many capoeira workshops in many places including Brazil, California, Texas. He has also done many presentations at special events in Brazil, U.S., Canada, Argentina, and Holland, including: the Half-time Festival for the “Orlando Magic” Basketball Team; Univision 23 Republica Deportiva; Fiesta Fort Lauderdale at Riverwalk; City of Hollywood Marti Gras parade; many area schools; Synergy Japan meets Brazil at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, plus a few interviews in U.S and Bahia television.
